#UpbeatAuthors

by Kathryn Jane

I belong to a Facebook group called #upbeatauthors. It was the brainchild of an author who was feeling (like many of us) overwhelmed by the negativity on social media. Her idea was to have a safe place where we could go to share positive outlooks, and uplifting words.

A whole bunch of us jumped on board of course, and we’ve grown to nearly three hundred members.

What do we do there?

Our leader has posted a theme for every week right up to the end of the year, and on Mondays, we post something positive, related to the theme.

Want to know the coolest thing about this group? In the beginning, many of us struggled a bit to come up with something to write, or share by picture, but as the weeks have gone on, so has the participation, and the ease with which the positivity flows!

Also cool, that when I remember to put my #upbeatauthors post on my own page, it often gets shared around Facebook, so I feel like I’m contributing to making the world a happier place. (Call me Pollyanna if you must, but I’m happy there!)

Here are a few of my favorite posters:

Your favorite historical figure

Ways to show the important people in your life that you love them in simple ways

Places you would like to go, and why

How to work smarter

Living in the moment/mindfulness

Turning a negative into a positive

When one door closes, another opens

Ways to be kind to yourself

How to deal with busy holiday season

Watch for a new #UpbeatAuthors post every Monday on my Facebook page, and see if you can resist the good feeling that comes from a positive heart!

I had a blog almost ready for posting, but it wasn’t a good fit for today, so instead, in the light of the tragedy in Las Vegas yesterday, I will simply share what I believe to be true.

Kindness and Love are the answer to all the troubles in the world. I know, it seems way too simple, or farfetched, and some might think the idea is beyond stupid, but I believe it down to the soles of my feet.

And I practice what I believe. I do my darndest to be a good person. To never be unkind.

Hard task?

It was for a while, because I grew up surrounded by negativity. Judging other people and believing the worst about others, was all I knew. But over the last few years it’s become easier and easier, to the point I don’t have to think about it, and I rarely have to reword a comment to make it positive instead of negative.

No small wonder this Maya Angelou quote resonates so deeply with me.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

I know better, I do better, and I celebrate.

It’s raining!

I don’t know about you, but those of us in the northwestern part of Canada are celebrating. Every year it gets hotter and drier and the earth is aging seemingly before our eyes.

It was always a dream for DH and I to move to Vancouver Island. We came here on our honeymoon and every year after that we could afford the trip. I craved the beautiful cedars, rhododendrons, ivy, and ferns. The lush greenness of the rainforest, the scent of the ocean on the air, the slap of the waves upon the shore… I could go on and on, lol.

Thirty years later we made the move and it was just as amazing as we remembered!

I’ve made new friends, explored this magical place I’m blessed to call home, and learned to feel the pulse of the land.

And it worries me.

The birds and wildlife that count on the weather to keep the forest green and the food plentiful, are suffering.

Global warming is not simply a term-it is a view of our future. Unless we do something to change it. Not soon.

Now.

We’ve just come through the worst fire season in our province’s history. I shudder to think how many animals perished along with our forests, crops, homes–lives.

The hurricanes in the southern United States destroyed countless businesses, displaced thousands of people, cost billions of dollars.

And that’s only the tip of a quickly thawing iceberg.

I know this seems all doom and gloom, but it doesn’t have to be. I think we’re being warned, shape up, or face the consequences.

The tide is turning. Many areas now are banning plastic bags, urging economical use of gas and electricity, and promoting more green spaces in cities. This is all good, but we need to do more.

Being part of the baby boomer generation, I think much of the blame lies with us. We grew up in a time of exploration (the first trip to the moon), innovation (personal computers and cell phones), and excess. Lots of excess! Plastic water bottles, disposable baby diapers, takeout foods. You name it, we’ve done it.

I’m amazed by our growth and embarrassed with our neglect.

And I thank God every day that the new generation has learned from our mistakes. My grandson knows all about recycling, composting, energy efficient bulbs, healthy eating, exercise, growing your own sustainable produce.

And he’s ten.

This tells me that we still have a chance.

I’m writing this, drinking herbal tea and listening to the rain as it dances on my roof, and I’m grateful because Mother Nature is forgiving if we just make an effort.

Have you ever attended the RWA National Conference?

I’ve been twice, RWA2014, and RWA2016, but I won’t be there this year because, well, reality. Between airfare, accommodation, and conference registration it would cost this Canadian about three grand, and that’s almost three month’s rent!

But as we slip into July, and the buzz has begun, I find myself thinking about my “best” conference moments.

It’s an incredible feeling to be in the same room as the authors you’ve been reading for years. Authors who have moved you to tears, made your heart swell with happiness, or perhaps inspired you.

I am grateful:

For laughter with Sam, AJ, Beverly, Stephanie, and Debi.

For time spent with Loreth and Toni.

For finally meeting my Sisterhood of Suspense peeps in person.

For the first ever meeting of the Seasoned Romance group.

For the incredible fangirl moments when I nearly brushed elbows with Roxanne St Claire, Kristan Higgins, and Jill Shalvis.

For the privilege of sitting in a room jammed to the roof with fans listening to Nora Roberts speak candidly about writing–a gracious, and down to earth woman, with a voice I could listen to all day.

I absolutely love that she breaks the rules of writing, and does it so perfectly we don’t notice or care. I reread The Bride Quartet, and The Chesapeake Bay trilogy (plus one), at least once a year.

And I’m addicted to her JD Robb In Death series. It’s 45 books long now, and yep, I reread it at least once a year because I absolutely love Eve Dallas and Roarke, and all the other characters.

So what about you? What are you grateful for?

Are you going to Nationals?

Who are your favorite authors? Who would you like to meet? Listen to?

Do you reread books? Series? Which ones?

Award winning author, Kathryn Jane writes the popular Intrepid Women Series. Novels filled with mystery, suspense, adventure, psychic abilities, and romance. Think MacGyver, Criminal Minds, and James Bond…with a dash of I Love Lucy.

Smiles are free!

Or should be. A smile doesn’t have to be earned. Oh yes, some people make you work for them, but really? Why?

When a random smile can change someone’s day, why would anyone be stingy?

A few days ago, I happened to be sitting in a hospital’s physiotherapy gym, where several people were going through the exercises assigned to them, and one lady was learning how to take hard, hard steps with a walker. I was watching her progress and silently rooting for her–when I was supposed to be chatting with someone else–and when the lady with the walker looked up, I smiled in encouragement.

What had been a dour, or possibly sad face to that point suddenly lit up with a beautiful smile. She’s a stranger, one I’ll never likely see again, but my smile moved her, and hers moved me, and it cost neither one of us anything.

And it lasts. I’m smiling now as I write this, and I hope thinking of that moment brightens her day once in a while too.

So smile. It’s free, and they are so darned worth the tiny effort required!

And there’s a bonus too… when you smile, you can’t help but feel better, no matter how your day is going!

head shot from RWA14Kathryn Jane has yet another new book about to hit the shelves, this one is a Women’s Fiction, with twists and turns that will keep you turning pages and cheering for the characters while they pull themselves up by the boot straps…and the ending will make you cry happy tears!

Workshops For Writers

Hey there, I’m Kathryn Jane, and I have a passion for sharing information with other writers and authors.

How many times have you said, wow, I wish I’d known that going in. Or muttered, isn’t there an easier way to do this? Or, how was I supposed to know this already? Why didn’t somebody tell me? Or, how the heck did I miss that that extra word?  😉 (you caught that, right?)

Sucks, doesn’t it? Been there, done that, bought many T-shirts…

That’s why I started sharing what I’d learned the hard way, by creating online workshops for my fellow writers. Yes, it’s time consuming, and there’s not a great deal of money to be made, but it feels good! (Apparently, I love teaching, who knew?)

I’m constantly updating my lessons with the latest information, and always happy to answer questions. The workshops are also archive friendly for those on deadline without time to actively participate.

Added to that, because the feedback from writers has been quite wonderful, I’ve recently added more workshops to my roster.

Pop over to the workshop page on my website for class details and availability.

1. SELF-EDITING “HOW’D I MISS THAT?”  Embarrassment Prevention
2. SELF-PUBLISHING —  “WHERE THE HECK DO I START?”  An Introduction
3. marketing — BACK COVER COPY “SHOOT ME Now!”
4. marketing — PRESS KITS – BE READY WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
5. research — WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN A HORSE SHOWS UP?
6. research — PTSD FOR FICTION WRITERS
7. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS for you and for your writing

Are there other workshops you wish someone would offer?  On what topics? Let me know and maybe I can help! 🙂

Hope you all have a great day, week and month. When I come back to visit in April, I’ll be sharing my brand new Women’s Fiction novel with you, and maybe some pics of my spring garden if Mother Nature cooperates.

Cheers!

Kat.

Celebrating my first featured @Bookbub #Sale #MFRWauthor #RSsos @jacqbiggar

For an indie author, the tough job of writing a book, editing, choosing covers (all of mine are done by the fabulous Kim Killion), learning how to format (if you’re doing your own I highly recommend Vellum!) and uploading to your chosen vendors can seem overwhelming.

hustle-and-bustle-1738072_640

Fortunately, there are many informative blogs, such as Kristen Lamb, Writer Unboxed, and Bookbub to guide our tottering steps through an unfamiliar territory.

One of the main pieces of advice I’ve heard over and over again is the importance of building a backlist. It only makes sense; how can you keep a reader’s interest if you only have one or two books to share with them?

To this end, I’ve been hard at work the past couple of years and just listed my ninth book, Missing: The Lady Said No for pre-order!

missing-the-lady-said-no-ebook

Another tip I’ve learned thanks to the mentorship of two special ladies, Mimi Barbour and Anna Markland, is the importance of building connections in the writing world. One of the best ways to do this is multi-author box sets.

I’ve been blessed to be involved with some very fine authors in these sets and made friendships that I treasure. I can’t recommend this enough-if you get the opportunity to join a box set, go for it!

One caveat I have to make to this- do your research. I went into one set where I didn’t know the coordinator, but was familiar with some of the other authors. A few months later, after many unanswered emails and Facebook messages, we found she had taken our money and our manuscripts, and skipped out on her obligation to the group. It was only through the hard work of some of the other members we received our money and a legal letter that she would never publish our books in any part.

So now, how do you get the word out about your new book babies?

One way is to post on blogs like this. Another is to promote on the many Facebook reading groups and tweeting five or six times a day (yes, they recommend at least that much!), or you can apply to book promotional sites.

Some are easy and not too expensive, but they also don’t have the benefits you can reap from the granddaddy of advertising: Bookbub

There are many different rumors about the difficulty of landing an ad with Bookbub, and to be honest, I tried a LOT before they finally accepted me, yay!

One thing I can say, it’s NOT true that you need a bunch of reviews (I heard everything from 50-150) I have 5, yep, 5.

It’s also NOT true that you need to be on all vendors sites before they will accept you. I’m loyal to Amazon.

It IS true that a professional cover is critical. As is a good blurb- one without grammatical errors and isn’t five pages long 🙂

It IS true that Bookbub is expensive to advertise with, but then, they have hundreds of thousands of followers and almost always propel a book into the top hundred in Amazon (Fingers crossed!)

It IS true that you can advertise internationally for a minimal upgrade. (I did, hoping to gain a new readership)

I’ve tried to benefit from this promotion by booking some smaller sites before and after the big day. I also set one of my other books to #Free during that period, The Guardian.

And don’t forget the pre-order for Missing: The Lady Said No. The book doesn’t release until April 25/17, but I thought this would be a good chance to gain early interest 🙂

So, I bet you’re wondering what book made it through the rigid Bookbub criteria?

Holly Jolly Christmas by Mona Risk

This novella is a prequel to the Holiday Babies Series

Heather and Jeff have always been in love. But to find herself pregnant now, at eighteen, before she starts college and he joins MIT for a master’s degree… Talk about the wrong time. Besides, the news might kill her father, who is battling cancer.

Although the decision to give up her baby is breaking her heart, Heather contacts an adoption agency. Except that Jeff absolutely refuses to consider her solution and their perfect relationship is slowly deteriorating.

How can they revive their loving bond and protect their baby’s future?

Do You Hear What I Hear? – Patricia Rosemoor

The song “Do You Hear What I Hear?” was written as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the middle of the Cold War. Now Christmas is just around the corner, and live-in-lovers Shelley and Jake are in a cold war of their own. Detective Shelley Caldwell has all wonderful memories of Christmas, while Jake DeAtley, born of a mother turned vampire while pregnant with him, has none. They’ve come to a compromise inthat she can decorate “her half” of every room, but no Christmas tree. Then a case of hit-and-run leaves a dead body and a magical Christmas tree that Shelley can’t resist bringing home, heating up the war between her and Jake. There is more to the tree than either knows. When they discover the truth about it, will it bring them together or keep them farther apart?

White Christmas – Rebecca York

The snow is coming down so fast, Amelia Parsons doesn’t see the speeding car until it’s too late. One moment she’s crossing an ice-rutted street in St. Stephens, Maryland. In the next, she’s flying into the air, and the world goes black. She wakes, confused, in what appears to be Santa’s workshop during the holiday rush. If that’s not strange enough, a hunky FBI agent named Daniel is there, demanding to know why she’s involved in a plot to ruin Christmas. Can she convince him she’s not the villain and then work with him to find the real saboteur?

So This is Christmas – Denise Devine

Annabelle Lee—is looking forward to a weekend of catching up, munching cookies and enjoying Christmas cheer with her childhood girlfriends. She hasn’t had a vacation since this time last year and desperately needs the time off. Her business has taken a toll on her life, leaving her exhausted and questioning the price of success. She arrives early at Ellie Stone’s family cabin to relax and decide the direction of her future, but to her dismay, she’s not alone. Ellie’s twin brother is also there and declares he isn’t leaving until Friday.

Christopher Stone—is the boy who mercilessly teased her when they were kids. He has grown into a handsome man with a career in professional baseball and a pop-star girlfriend. He appears to have an idyllic life, but the longer they talk, the more Annabelle suspects his love life isn’t as perfect as he claims. She can’t deny her attraction to him and knows he’s attracted to her as well.

Best Friends Forever—will this week be like old times or the beginning of a new chapter in her life?

Grown Up Christmas List – Donna Fasano

Dina Griffin is on the run and wants only one thing this Christmas—to feel safe. However, Officer Gav Thomas tries to arrest her. Arrest her? Yes. But the two become friends, and soon the attraction they feel is unmistakable, even though Gav senses Dina is hiding something. Is he really a local cop… or her guardian angel?

Blue Christmas – Traci Hall

Librarian/waitress Tamsyn Lee is all about accepting change, while Evan Hawke must do everything just the same in order to find his muse. He hopes the seaside grill he wrote his first mystery masterpiece in will kick-start his third book before his publisher drops him. Tamsyn has zero tolerance for divas, but she’s read Evan’s novel and knows he has the talent. Besides, helping him takes the focus off of spending Christmas without her family. Evan realizes he needs a miracle—could feisty Tamsyn be an angel in sneakers and a ponytail?

Santa Baby – Taylor Lee

Dancing to Eartha Kitt’s sultry list of all goodies she expected Santa Baby to put under her tree, Lily slid down the pole and stifled a sigh. A blue convertible? A sable? A Tiffany ring? Right! Like Lily could expect anything remotely like that under her tree! How about first making sure she had a tree.

At that moment she saw him. The big man with the shaggy blond hair and gleaming dark eyes was leaning casually back in his chair. His narrowed expression was hard, knowing. It was clear that he was studying her. Stunned, she quickly looked away, her carefully honed rules fleeing in her panic. The imposing man had “cop” written all over him. Squashing down her terror, Lily pasted a professional smile on her face, waved to the screaming crowd, and fled the stage.

Anyone who’d ever tangled with dirty cops knew that the hard blue line protected the most egregious acts committed by one of their brothers. If anyone doubted that was true all they had to know was that Aiden was a free man and Lily was on the run.

Lily’s only hope was that this time she and Gabriella had run far enough, fast enough, that he wouldn’t be able to find them.

If he was any judge of women who shed their clothes for a living, and Zach most certainly was, he recognized her startled wide-eyed expression. He’d seen it far too many times in his line of work. It was fear, pure and simple.

The Vice Cop reminded himself all that meant was that the beautiful woman had something big to hide.

Let it Snow – Stephanie Queen

Guilt and sorrow eat at ex-special ops legend Dane Blaise like kryptonite until he can’t remember why he wanted Shana, his ex-Scotland Yard partner and former balm for his soul.

Shana can’t reach him and she’s desperate until a stranger, a padre from South America shows up in a snow storm on Christmas Eve. The stranger claims he’s there to help, but what can he possibly do…

Merry, Did You Know? – Jennifer St. Giles

MC Love has decided to give her soon to be born baby up for adoption. In her experience, the cons of growing up in the Love’s family dynasty far outweigh the pros. She wants her baby to have stable parents and a normal life, far from her family’s dysfunctional insanity and the paparazzi that hound her and her seven sisters, all of which are step except one (Her mother, True Love, is still looking for the love of her life). None of the Loves are lucky in love. Her sisters Pure and Sweet had a reality TV show, Love’s Truth about the Loves’ romantic tragedies.

MC does not want her own misfortune in the gossip columns or on her sisters’ show. She has kept her pregnancy a secret as is currently hiding on St. Simons Island, Georgia while her family thinks she is vacationing in a villa in France. She has a week to choose the parents for her child which is due in one month. Everything is on track.

What MC doesn’t plan on is Doug Warren, the man who lives in the condo next to her. The man whose music in the middle of the night makes her heart sing and weep. The man who changes everything.

Doug Warren is trying to breathe again. After the tragic loss of his wife and daughter three years ago, he has his head down, focused on surviving one day at a time. Christmas is the worst time of year. He can’t afford anything to shake the fragile balance he has gained. Two things happen to throw him into the deep end. His family tells him they are descending in mass at Christmas and his neighbor’s adoption papers smack him in the face.

Once he meets MC, he is unable to go back to his status quo. How could she give away what he would die over and over again to have back? He sets on a mission to find out why. And as she helps him prepare for his family’s arrival, his mission changes as the impossible unfolds. Doug’s not only breathing, but his heart is beating, stronger than ever for a woman and her unborn child.

Can he convince her to believe in miracles and trust in him?

O Christmas Tree – Alicia Street

Blaming himself for the collapse of a storm shelter that took the lives of his wife and son in a violent tornado, Cody has spent the last three years running, moving from place to place, taking whatever odd job is available to sustain his empty life.

Piper knows what it takes to endure and hope in the face of the odds, especially at Christmas, so when the ruggedly handsome man with the desolate look in his face steps into her cat cafe to deliver a box of stray kittens, something tells her it’s going to be a very interesting holiday.

Sleigh Ride – Katy Walters

Having lost her father, The Reverend Stuart Vale, the third son of an Earl to yellow fever, Miss Sophia Vale, faced a life of genteel poverty. Not for her the whirl of balls, routs and clandestine meetings in Vauxhall Gardens, nor for her the thrill of meeting that special beau. Yet being of strong will, she determined to banish such frippery dreams and help her bereaved mama to rear her brood of six daughters and one young son.

However Baron Jude Hawsley, a lecher with a penchant for young maidens has other ideas for the unwitting Sophia.

Enter Lord Wells, the Earl of Breconbridge, renowned as a rakehell, his saving grace being a conscience. Yet he guards a secret life, involving much danger for himself and those close to him. Will his conscience win the day? Will he save Sophia from the horrors of enslavement to the baron.

Deck the Hearts – Rachelle Ayala

Holly Jolly lives for Christmas. It’s the only time of the year, as far as she’s concerned.

Gordon Gills doesn’t need a reason to hate the holiday season. He doesn’t see the point.

Gordon returns to the mansion he inherited and finds Holly making a mess with her Christmas decorations. Unfortunately, his great-aunt’s will stipulates that he must make merry every Christmas if he wants to keep his inheritance.

Holly is determined to infect the grouchy Gordon with every dose of Christmas cheer she can muster up and show him what Christmas is really about, while Gordon doesn’t believe Holly can be truly that cheerful. He’ll make the entire ordeal anything but jolly for the redheaded elf, if only he wasn’t so attracted to her.

Will Gordon prevail and turn Holly into a Grinch, or will a sprinkling of Christmas magic show Gordon that there’s no fighting love, especially when it’s wrapped up in a gorgeous red-headed package of jolly holly?

Silver Bells – Jacquie Biggar

Mystery writer, Joel Carpenter, has no time for romance. He has a deadline to meet, and too many skeletons in his closet to trust the slightly spinny artist renting his house.

Christy Taylor has her hands full dealing with an ailing business and a diabetic daughter, she doesn’t need the temptation that is her landlord, Joel Carpenter.

Can a Christmas wish bring two stubborn souls together and give a little girl the gift she wants most?

A family of her own.

Hark the Herald Angel Falls – Michele Hauf

To earn her halo, angel Merit must convince the person who holds her earthly soul in limbo—her husband—to stop loving her.

Little Drummer Boy – Dani Haviland

Reduced to becoming a drummer boy at half wages, the young scout shows his worth when a small band of post-Revolutionary War soldiers and citizens become lost in the worst winter storm of the late 18th century. Will the unexpected arrival of his malcontent father help or hurt their situation?

Katy Walters

I began with a publisher but loved the freedom of Amazon and so I am an independent author living on the South Coast of the UK. Previously, I enjoyed a career as a research psychologist and psychotherapist, As the children grew and flew the nest, I decided to write about my experiences to help others, but as I began writing, my pen spelt out a different course and I was soon writing novels. These are historical romance suspense, with an underlying theme that I hoped inspire those who long to overcome their inhibiting fear, and reach their goals. From the reviews and private emails from readers, this has worked and I am so glad. It makes my writing even more worthwhile. I am now on the twentieth book and love it.

I get a lot of my inspiration for plots whilst walking with my dog Lily along beaches and in the nearby woods. She features in all my books under pseudonyms and is portrayed as her own wonderful zany self.
