She welcomed the anguish like a long-lost friend. Embraced it, wallowed in it until she was reduced to sobbing like a lost child.
He wiped her tears with his thumb then released her. His eyes burned as she walked out the door—out of his life. Deep in his heart, he knew they’d be together someday. Mia just needed to come to the same conclusion. He’d bide his time before he went after her.
Another deep exhale, another long silence. “Why did you leave like that?”
My heart broke for the sound of hurt in his voice. Gone was his playfulness, now replaced with something painful.
